About This Trek

The Khopra Ridge Trek (also known as the Khopra Danda Trek) is one of Nepal's most rewarding hidden gems β€” a community-managed trail in the Annapurna Conservation Area that sees a fraction of the visitors of Poon Hill or the main circuit, yet offers even more spectacular mountain panoramas.

The route climbs to Khopra Ridge (3,660m) and continues to the sacred high-altitude Khayer Lake (4,660m) β€” a holy lake revered by local communities, set in a dramatic alpine bowl beneath Annapurna South and the Nilgiri peaks. The views from the ridge stretch from Dhaulagiri (8,167m) in the west to the entire Annapurna massif in the east β€” arguably the finest unobstructed panorama of these two great mountain groups available anywhere.

The trail passes through genuine, unspoiled Magar and Gurung villages where tourism infrastructure is minimal β€” giving trekkers a taste of authentic rural Nepal rarely experienced on more popular routes.

Best Time to Trek

πŸ‚ Autumn (Sep – Nov)

Optimal season. Clear views, stable weather, and the best conditions for the Khayer Lake hike. October is perfect β€” expect crisp, cold mornings and warm afternoons.

🌸 Spring (Mar – May)

Rhododendron blooms are extraordinary on this trail. Good mountain views and pleasant temperatures. Some cloud buildup in afternoons is typical.

❄️ Winter (Dec – Feb)

Khopra Ridge has snow and Khayer Lake may be inaccessible. The lower section is beautiful with snow-capped views. Suitable for experienced winter trekkers.

🌧 Monsoon (Jun – Aug)

Very wet lower sections with leeches. The ridge can have excellent views on clear days between monsoon clouds. Not generally recommended.

Important Notes

Community Lodges: Above Ghorepani, accommodation is in community-managed lodges that directly fund conservation and local livelihoods. Facilities are more basic than standard teahouses β€” embrace the experience.

Khayer Lake Hike: The hike from Khopra Ridge to Khayer Lake (4,660m) is a long day with significant altitude gain. Early morning departure is essential. Trekkers should feel well-acclimatized before attempting this extension.

Conservation Fee: A small additional conservation fee is paid directly to the Khopra Danda Community Management Committee β€” included in our pricing and directly supports trail maintenance and wildlife conservation.

Wildlife: This area is known habitat for the endangered red panda. Keep noise low and stay on trails β€” you may be rewarded with a sighting in the early morning hours.
